"You're going out with who?" Anaki leaned against the kitchen counter, balancing a bowl of cereal in one hand as she shoveled it into her mouth.

"The tech guy for the Ghost Hawk and Spider team. His name's Jun." Cooper sat at the kitchen table drinking orange juice, a plate of jelly toast in front of him.

"Oh." Anaki thought about that. "What's it like? Dating someone else in the business? Especially, you know, someone who's not a hero, who's support like us?"

"I …" Cooper rubbed a hand across the back of his head, making his curls stick up at weird angles and look fluffy in a way he hated. "We've only gone on one date, and I didn't actually even know he was in the business except that the attack happened while we were out."

"Kaniela told me, and I saw on the news the Queen of Skulls tore up part of downtown pretty bad. Luckily there were only minor injuries, though."

"Yeah." Cooper toyed with his toast. "So if that hadn't happened I would never even have known Jun worked with those guys. I just thought he owned a comic book shop."

"A comic book shop?" Anaki raised her eyebrows and laughed. "As a cover? Cute."

"I'm really glad he's in the business, though." Cooper watched a drop of condensation roll down the side of his glass of orange juice, leaving a streak of transparency against the clouded glass. "I don't need to hide it from him and he'll understand, you know, when things come up."

"Well, good luck to you." Anaki finished off her cereal, putting the empty bowl in the dishwasher before heading for the door. "I'll be in the lab if you need me."

"Okay." Cooper picked up a piece of toast again but didn't feel like eating it and set it aside. His second date with Jun was supposed to be that night, and Kaniela had given him the time off with an unreadable stony look Cooper chose to interpret as Kaniela being happy for him. That was, of course, barring any emergency situations. Cooper had spent the entire day since he'd woken up trying not to think about emergency situations. He cupped his chin on his hands and sighed. Anxiety made his stomach roil again. Pushing his plate aside, he stood. Obviously breakfast was a bust so he might as well get started on the day's work until it was time to get ready for his date.

He ended up picking at work while inwardly freaking out, and mostly just watched Doctor Who clips on the internet. Even the prettiness of the tenth Doctor in his suit and glasses only managed to sooth Cooper's anxiety a little though.

At 4:00 PM he peeled himself away from his computers and headed back upstairs to shower and change. His hands were shaking so much by the time he started to shave that he had to stop and take several breaths with his eyes closed before he trusted himself to put blade to skin. He wanted this, he told himself.
